Who we are looking for
UTC looks for exceptional individuals who have a demonstrated commitment to or interest in public service, who have a relentless desire to improve educational outcomes for urban youth, and who have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
UTC looks for results-oriented college graduates and career-changers that do not have a formal teaching methods background or prior teacher license, and have strengths in the following four dispositions:
- Academic Performance: Strong critical thinking skills, creative and innovative, subject matter expertise
- Relentless Pursuit of Results: Perseverant, resilient, resourceful
- Emotional Intelligence: Responsive to and seeks feedback, demonstrated humility, excellent interpersonal skills, good listener and observer, collaborative
- Commitment to Children and Youth and Educational Equity: Belief in the academic potential of every child
Though it is not essential, UTC also looks for individuals who have volunteer or work experience with children and youth, preferably in an urban setting, such as City Year, Breakthrough Collaborative, Higher Achievement and Jumpstart. Individuals must have a 2.75 cumulative undergraduate GPA, although 3.0 or higher preferred.
